Mysteries for Reading on Planes
Recently packing for a trip to Alaska, I had to decide which books to take for reading on the plane. I don’t like to fly – not quite a white-knuckler, but still not a happy flyer. I wanted something funny and distracting, so I chose Jeffrey Cohen’s A Night at the Operation. It was a good choice!
So which book(s) would you take on a long plane ride and why?
See below for a photo of me with Terry Miller, managing editor of the Ketchikan (Alaska) Daily News and a fellow Dorothyler.

Ahhh, the beauty of Kindle. I can take TONS along in one small package. But what I plan to read when I fly next (August) is The Diva Takes the Cake by Krista Davis. I just finished The Diva Runs Out of Thyme and found it most enjoyable and certainly entertaining enough to forget a long flight. It’s a good mystery full of interesting characters and has its funny moments as well.

OH, WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY.
Find Jess Lourey’s Murder by the Month series. Start anywhere. JUNE BUG.
MAY DAY, KNEE HIGH BY THE FOURTH OF JULY.
they are funny, just a little bit raunchy and very distracting.

If I remember (years ago) Ketchikan was definitely a white knuckle flight from Seattle. Because of unpredictable weather, our plane dipped down for a look and then roared back up, accompanied by groans from the Ketchikan passenger who had to go on to Juneau.
Juneau wasn’t much better. We had to make it through one small pass in the mountains before the fog rolled in. I was darn glad to get off that plane! Later I found out that Juneau’s wind sock was a piece of chain!
No reading for me on that flight! It was about 1970 or ‘71.

I don’t like to fly either, so I’m here to see some suggestions! (and to say Hi to you AND to Terry!).
Since I haven’t tried Jess Lourey’s series yet, and Carl says such great things about them, well – there you go. I think I’d give these a try.

I would choose one of the novels starring Mr. Monk from the TV series. They’re very clever and make me laugh, which would be a good thing since I don’t like to fly.

For a lazy summer read on the beach or in a plane, I enjoyed Lawrence
Saunders “commandment” series. Especially “The Tenth Commandment”.
His “Sullivan’s Sting” was entertaining and non-thought provoking as well.
Spent 2 weeks in Alaska and loved it.

I usually like a nice long book so I can really get into it if I get stuck somewhere. Maybe Tami Hoag or even J.A. Jance would interest me.
